The History of Muethelo

The culture group, Muethelo, of the St.John’s High School of Marrere was created in 2006.

At that time, the group did not have a great number of occasions to perform, however at the beginning of 2009 it started having more importance. At first the group only performed drama plays. However with the endorsement of some new members more cultural activities started to be developed, such as literature meetings. This gave a number of successes to the group and its popularity increased. Presently Muethelo has 18 members, from ages 15 to 19. Its coordinators are two of the older students: Howard José Camando and Gertrudes da Glória Lopes.

The cultural activities that Muethelo have developed are drama plays, traditional dances and, with lesser frequency, debates. Plays are sometimes creations on present themes which trouble society, an example of such is AIDS which is still an enemy in fog, face unknown. Dances and the music rhythming them are a way to honor the ways of the elders and keep an identity alive, the Macua.

Muethelo already achieved some reputation by participating in regional tournaments for three years and by winning the first place twice.

The EPJM is proud of its culture group and incentivizes students not to forget that the value of Art for humanity.
